As I may have mentioned, my job is taking phone calls for a medical newsletter. For the most part my customers are wonderful. I have worked so many crappy jobs where the customers were horrible. Working with the public can only do one thing to you......Make you in favor of the bomb. (Wish I could take credit for that. I heard a comedian say it once many years ago and it stuck in my head. I just wish I could remember who it was.)
Once in a while, I get callers that make me so angry I want to reach out and choke someone. I had 2 calls like that today.
There are 2 things I don't deal well with......hatred and fucking attitude.
The first one, a lady mentioned how tough times are now. I simply said, "I hope for all of us that things improve." She started in on about how Obama hasn't made any of his plans clear , then went on to talk about how she was anti-abortion and didn't believe in "special rights for homos". That burned me the hell up. I wanted so badly to say, "Lady, guess what. You are talking to a pro-choice homo." (All true, all true.) However, even though I couldn't say that, I still put her in her place. I said, "I really prefer not to talk politics on the phone." It shut her up. I feel bad for her that she is having a hard time, but I did not appreciate the hate. Had she not said the word "homos" with such vitriol, I would have let it slide. I couldn't let it go without comment though.
The second call was from a lady that was upset about a charge on her CC. Now, I can understand that. However, the charge was for something she authorized. (despite her protests she didn't. This was for something we offer, we don't just charge for it for no reason.....EVER. The customer has to agree to it.) She was being very rude to me, yelling, so I finally had enough. I was polite, but - like with the first one - put her in her place. I simply said, "Just calm down, I am trying to help you." I wanted to add, "...but I can't if you keep fucking yelling at me."
We have a policy where we can hang up after warning someone 3 times that if they don't stop the abusive language we will release the call. I have utilized this option a few times because all people wanted to do was argue. Nuh uh. Homey don't play that.
A while back, I got a call that pissed me off so bad that I wanted to hunt this guy down and cause him some serious injury.
He started out nice enough. We were having a good conversation. Then while I was looking something up for him, he - just out of the blue - said something about Moses stealing gold when the whole Red Sea thing (supposedly) happened.
I really didn't hear it all, but I just said, "I did not know that." Then he started spouting out a bunch of anti-semitist remarks. I about hit the roof. I kept my cool, though, and said, "I really don't want to talk about that" to which he replied, "No one ever does." I finished the order somehow.
Today, I was glad break was not too far after the first call. I really needed to catch my breath and cool down. I went to the car and cranked up some Hendrix. What a great way to decompress.
Why do people have to be this way? It just makes no damn sense
